Dental bridges are non-removable prostheses which replace missing teeth by using the surrounding teeth as a foundation. The name comes from the restoration literally "bridging" the space between remaining teeth and missing teeth. We are respected Bucks County cosmetic dentists with many years of experience replacing missing teeth and restoring our patients' ability to chew, speak and smile normally. After a no-fee consultation with us, you may decide that bridges are a favorable alternative to partial dentures or dental implants, based on your particular needs.
Candidates for Dental Bridges
If you have lost a tooth to disease, decay, extreme wear and tear or an injury, you may be a candidate for dental bridges. You should have healthy supporting teeth on one or both sides of the gap left by your missing tooth.
Types of Dental Bridges
A traditional dental bridge consists of two crowns attached to both sides of an artificial tooth. The tooth slips into the gap left by your missing tooth, and the dental crowns are secured over the surface of your teeth on either side. A cantilever dental bridge is used when you have healthy teeth on only one side of your gap.
Placing Dental Bridges
We place dental bridges in several steps. First, the teeth on one or both sides of the gap are prepared to receive the dental crowns; this involves removing a small bit of tooth enamel to make room for your crowns. Once your teeth have been prepared, we take digital dental impressions of your teeth, and the impressions are used to help fabricate your custom dental bridge in a laboratory. This takes several weeks. In the meantime, we will place a temporary bridge.
When your permanent dental bridge is ready, you'll return to our office to have it placed. Your temporary bridge is removed and your permanent bridge is bonded or cemented into place. The bridge slips over your teeth on one or both sides of the gap before being cemented into place, and the false tooth fits snugly into the gap. We will check your bite and make minor fit adjustments if necessary.
Benefits of Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are often crafted from porcelain materials, which very closely resemble natural teeth in color and translucence. They restore normal appearance to your smile, which would otherwise look uneven and unhealthy.
